March 6: Arrive at Mena House Hotel

Got a cab from the airport to the Mena House.  Arrived about 4pm.   The Mena House was a destination all by itself.

The Oberoi Mena House Hotel was originally a royal lodge built for Egypt's Vice King Kedive Ismail and used when he and friends were hunting in the desert or visiting the pyramids.  The Pharaoh Mena was the first ruler of a united Egypt.

Rooms were added in 1869 for the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal as the Kedive wanted Empress Eugenie to see the pyramids and then from a proper place.
You can see the location is superb, right next to the pyramids at Giza.  This picture is just outside our room looking across the Mena House gardens to the pyramids.
We walked around the other side of the hotel to get pictures of ourselves with the pyramids in the background.
The Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the three big pyramids at Giza is in the background.
